It is endemic to the serpentine barrens of southeast Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. It can be found also in some spots in DE, WV, and NC. Serpentine soil is derived from the greenish-gray, soft serpentine rock, and it is shallow, sort of dry, and has a high amount of chromium, nickel, and magnesium and low calcium as elements in its chemistry. This plant is one of the specific species that grow in such unique soil along with other endemic plants as: Fameflower, Moss Pink, Lyre-leaved Rockcress, Annual Fimry, Wood Lily, Sandplain Gentian, Glade Spurge, and others.
