Hybrids have been made between this species and the Eastern White Pine and a few cultivars of which have been introduced which combine some of the best characteristics (especially improved cold hardiness and blue color) of its parents. Forest Sky is a lovely example of this cross. The Southwestern White Pine (strobiformis) was once considered a variety of P. ayacahuite, but is mostly treated a distinct species now. Although Pinus ayacahuite is relatively rare (yet plentiful In its native range) it is not considered at risk of becoming endangered.
