Nope, coming back from the roots, 6 shoots one already 5 feet long here in early May. I’m so happy. I would have been devastated to lose this plant. They can obviously take more cold than once believed. I think mine has been in the ground for 10 years or more and I’m sure the well developed root system helped. I had some growing in pots and moved them into the greenhouse for the winter because it can get into the 20's F every once in a while, although it doesn't freeze often. These creepers grew into the ground under the pots and came back from the roots in the late spring. This has happened several years in a row so I believe they are root hardy to zone 9a. The vine itself will die back to the ground though.
The flower's fragrance is intoxicatingly: like sweet candy similar to some passiflora but much stronger and gets stronger as the daylight fades into night. The sprays of flowers bloom en masse and start out white and gradually darken to maroon so there can be white, pink, red, and deep maroon blooms of flowers on the vine all at the same time.
It gets very tall and requires a sturdy trellis. I grow mine in full sun. They like lots of water in the summer.
