Mr. Hendrik van Zijl wrote to me, " I live in an amazing place. Nieuwoudtville and surrounds we call the Bulb Capital of the World. It is accepted by botanists that NVILLE has the highest speciation of bulbs per area.
Just 20k away is the Knersvlakte ( Google ) one of the hot spots for succulents in the world. And my passion is for bulbs and succulents. How lucky can one be !!!"
Mr. Hendrik van Zijl has stated:
"This Brunsvigia will only flower annually if 15mm or more rain falls towards the end of March. Last year rain fell on the 31st of March and this Brunsvigia was in full flower from the 18th on April onwards.
This year we had 15mm of rain on the 24th of March and the Brunsvigias are breaking through the soil by the thousands. I expect the flowers to be in full bloom from the 16th of April onwards." http://nieuwoudtville.co.za/index/
Mr. Hendrik van Zijl has stated re his seed photos: Nieuwoudtville. Brunsvigia bosmaniae. The pictures were taken 21 May, 2013. This collage shows how the inflorescences have dried out and how the fleshy seeds have been formed. This plant distributes its fleshy seeds by cart wheeling across the veld. We now need rain for the seeds to produce a root. I estimate that just a few of the ten thousands will actually get a survival toehold. My guess is that it may take 5 – 7 years for this year’s seedling to come to flower. Hendrik van Zijl. http//www.nieuwoudtville.co.za
