This plant is easily confused with C. perfoliata subsp. perfoliata when not in flower but the red summer flowers for which it is named make it unmistakeable. In South Africa this plant is only found on coastal areas between Port Elizabeth and King William's Town. This contrasts with the white flowered C. perfoliata subsp. perfoliata which originates in the eastern Nama Karoo region.
