F. scabrida is generally listed as hardy to -5F, USDA Zone 6b. Fargesias do not perform well where summers are hot, like the southeastern US. They usually do best in light shade, and are much more shade tolerant than most bamboos.
Unlike most bamboos, Fargesias form slowly expanding clumps and do not run. The clumps have a beautiful fountainlike habit.

This is a non-invasive clumping bamboo. New culms have orange sheaths, and are a steel blue/lavender color at first, aging to green. Colorful!
