Mine is potted in full sun but it does get protection from branches of bigger plants nearby. May or may not go dormant in zone 9a winter, but it comes back reliably, and has for years.
UPDATE AUG 2016: I have planted some in ground b/c, not being as vigorous as the red, I knew it wouldn't add to my already long list of chores. I was right. It is making a nice mound but I've not having to fight volunteers. Very lovely plant.
