POKE HERE IN MISSOURI CAN GROW UP TO 6' IN THE WILD. INFACT, MANY PEOPLE CALL IT A WEED AS IT IS A LARGE PLANT AND NOT TOO PRETTY LATE IN THE YEAR.. YES THE BERRIES ARE POISON. THE WHOLE PLANT IS ONCE THE FLOWERS BLOOM. IF YOU KEEP PICKING AND PREVENT THE FLOWER BUDS FROM FORMING, IT IS OKAY TO EAT. I HAVE SEEN THIS IN THE WILD SINCE I WAS A CHILD (70 YEARS AGO). MY GRANDMOTHER USED TO PICK THE LEAVES AND YOUNG STALKS FOR WILD GREENS ALONG WITH DOCK, LAMBSQUARTER, COLTSFOOT, DANDELION, SQUAREWEED AND MANY OTHERS. THEN YOU COOKED IT DOWN AND ADDED TURNIP AND MUSTARD GREENS, ADDED A BIT OF BACON OR JOWL FOR SEASONING AND FIXED A PAN OF CORNBREAD AND CUT UP A FEW FRESH GREEN ONIONS AND YOU HAD DINNER. IT IS USUALLY LARGE ENOUGH TO START PICKING AROUND THE END OF MAY. I HAVE A COUPLE OF PLANTS FOR MY GREENS EARLY IN THE YEAR. GRANDMA ALWAYS SAID THE GREENS CLEANED OUT THE TOXINS IN YOUR BLOOD FROM THE WINTER. I DO KNOW IT TASTES GOOD.
