In the course of straightening the planter, we're pretty sure it broke the taproot. We decided to let it be, and see if it would recover. It did! Over the last two years or so, I've pruned back branches that apparently were not going to recover, but it's put out new ones, and seems to be doing well.
I can't speak for emus, but hummingbirds absolutely love it, along with another small bird that I can't identify.
I have a question, though. I'm expanding the amount of veg that I plant, and I'm wondering what might be ok to grow under the emu. Does anyone know?

This will be my 9th variety. They are made for the desert southwest because they are so drought and heat tolerant and withstood our recent record 18ºF cold. You can plant them so you have year-round blooms. I can't extole the virtues of these bushes enough!! Check them out on Wikipedia.
