Male and female flowers bloom on separate plants - female flowers are rather inconspicuous, greeny-yellow "puffs"of petal-less sepals, while male blooms have purple petals with pendulous yellow stamens. Thrives in moist and shady conditions. I have seen plants reach 3 ft. tall on occasion though most are 18-24". Suspect it would be a good garden plant if you could be sure to obtain male plants, though the foliage is so good the rather ho-hum females could well be tolerated!
