Their bold foliage blends nicely with palms or other trees and will make almost any garden look exotic. They make excellent companion plants and bring different textures, shapes and diversity. One such large-leaved plant is this clump of Cyrtosperma merkusii or giant swamp taro, which towers in a corner of my front garden. The biggest leaf is over 2ft long. I have had this for more than 20 years. Ideally grown in a bog garden, mine is in a big pot to curtail its spread. This is a swamp crop which is similar to taro, grown throughout Oceania and into South and Southeast Asia, in riverines. It is believed to be native to Indonesia."
