I bought this 2 or 3 years ago from Berkeley Horticultural Nursery. It came from Flatland Flower Farm in Sebastopol, CA. The tag said: ...Read More"Red raspberry growing 40 years for Else van Baldrick in Sebastopol. GREAT fruit June - October. Full sun, reg. water".
I've had Heritage and Canby and they both died the death (though, to be fair, I planted those in an EarthBox and I planted Else's Choice in a large raised bed) of what seemed to be a fungal infection. Else's Choice has produced without babying (which is good 'cause I still don't know my way around cane berries). It has a glorious spring green with accents of burgundy. Its stickers are pretty mild, but it'll still hurt if you get one in you the wrong way.
The berries are a good balance of sweet and tart. I actually like mine a bit tarter, but it's a small sacrifice to make for a cultivar that thrives here when others have died.
