Salt Lake City, UT (Zone 7b) | June 2021 | positive
This rare and unique evergreen tree does surprisingly great here in Salt Lake City, Utah (zone 7b). I have one that gets a good amount of...Read More shade and then one that gets mostly sun and honestly the one that gets the most sun is growing faster and looks much healthier and full. I was surprised to see this as we can get up to 105 F and sometimes even more in the summer and it can stay that way for months on end. I have also found them to be pretty dang drought tolerant, but I would recommend watering them often if you have them planted in full sun atleast in this desert climate. Unfortunately Sycopsis sinensis can be extremely hard to find and I had to pick one up when I was in Northern California because I couldn’t find them anywhere else. This is such an interesting and beautiful tree and I hope it can gain more popularity. I would also say this tree is most likely hardy to zone 7a (0 F) because at the lowest temperature we pretty much ever get in the harshest of winters (5 F) this tree had absolutely no damage on a single leaf and looked perfectly fine. If you can find this tree anywhere, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY. It is well worth the investment and you will not be disappointed given that it’s in the right environment.
