Zantedeschia, Arum Lily, Calla Lily 'White Giant'

I have had great results in my zone 8b/9 garden by growing this Calla Lilly in a very large pot. I have 2 of them at the head of my drive...Read Moreway in a somewhat shady spot (under live oaks). Most of the time I do not water them at all and they have to get by with whatever rain fall happens, none the less they are evergreen with luscious foliage that the deer do not seem to like.

Starting in January I liberally add bloom booster to the soil in each pot and dump one (home depot size) bucket of water per week in to each pot. This usually results in blooms within a 2 week period. I keep this up for about 2 months and then the plant will stop blooming.

Here, on the South Carolina coast, I find plants from South Africa bloom nicely in January and February when nothing else much blooms, except pansies (it is summer in South Africa then). I have started scouting out other South Africa natives (e.g. Agapanthus) with similar good results ...

have had this plant almost a year now. first in a pot in partial sun (slow but steady growth), then planted in the garden in full sun (n...Read Moreearly burned to death) and now back in a pot in filtered sun. suddenly the growth this fall has been crazy good and i finally have my first flower. i water no more than once a week and less now in winter. i do mist under the leaves often for spidermite prevention. don't know where it will end up this summer as it is bound to outgrow the pot at the present rate it's going. all in all, a fascinating plant. the leaves are thick and leathery, yet soft. i love touching it.

I've grown this in the ground, zone 5. It gets very big. In my experience it didn't get any more water than the rest of the garden.
