I initially dug a 10 inch deep trench around a eight-foot circle and 2 times a year I spade around it to chop off any culms sneaking across the trench. So far, so good. The new stalks are becoming thicker (from less than 1 inch in the beginning to 1-1/2 to 2 inches now). Planted in 2002.
