Has surprising cold tolerance and adaptability in southern California where it is a fairly rapidly growing tree (for a pachycaul species), though it can be rotted if allowed to get too wet in winters (particularly smaller seedlings). Has to be planted in very well draining soils. Tends to be deciduous in cold winters.

In front of the Universit...Read Morey of Tulear, I found this elegant pachycaul trees with nice silvery smooth-trunk and having many seed pods. The keeper allowed me to pick some seed back to Thailand. I also found some nice specimen at Berenty Private Reserve, near Fort Daufin on the SE coast of Madgascar too.
Fascinatingly, the seeds germinated and seem to grow really fast. Some seedling which I gave to my friends here is now 10 feet tall and getting fruits! certainly, they grow their plant in the ground.
