Mine got hit hard by spider mites last s...Read Moreummer, but I cut of all the infested foliage and put down a systemic insecticide, and within two weeks they'd filled out again. Cut back again in late winter right before their bloom season, which is long, from late winter well into spring. Takes a few hours of afternoon sun and sometimes wilts a bit, but recovers quickly. No idea why this isn't more common in nurseries.

So far this spring, this plant has been blooming for 6 weeks in my garden. The leaves offer great contrast against solid color blue or green hostas.

Needs almost no maintenance other than not letting it get overly dry in the summer.

Unlike ferns, it doesn't mind our soggy springs, hot (100F), humid summers, or even an occasional drought. It's also one of the last plants to disappear in the winter (snow won't zap it, but reallly cold weather will), and then one of the very first to return in the spring. I'm a fan :)
