White-flowered forms also differ from the species in having fruits that are bright yellow, not scarlet.

Loves cool summers, part/light shade. Performs best in moist, moderately alkaline soils rich in humus and sand. Requires good drainage and cool roots. Hates the hot humid climate of the southeastern US.

These are short-lived plants, generally living less than 10 years. Susceptible to viral infection, so most plants in commerce are seed-grown. Plants can be tempermental, sometimes given to rapid death for no discernible reason.

The bright yellow fruits are showy, but like all parts of the plants they are highly poisonous to humans if ingested. Also the sap may cause skin rash.
