It originated as a nursery seedling created by open pollination of Miscanthus sinensis ‘Strictus’. The horizontal markings are much closer together than other banded miscanthus giving it a striking appearance.'Gold Bar' has 12-17 bands per leaf; whereas, M. 'Strictus' only has 2-3 bands.

It is a slow grower reaching a height of 5 feet in 8 years according to Joy Creek Nursery. It grows to be about 20 inches at the base. It prospers in full sun; however, it can take part shade. In hot regions some afternoon shade is best. If not receiving enough sun, it will not grow nor bloom as vigorously and has a tendency to flop over. Its circumference will slowly expand by short rhizomes; however, it will keep its tight clump form. Near the end of October, just above the blades.burgundy over white blooms begin to appear. They fade to beige. Divide 'Gold Bar' in spring or early summer. This dwarf ornamental grass can be used as an accent, a specimen and/or in groupings and tolerates a wide range of soils. It may be planted at water's edge and in coastal gardens. It can be grown in large containers as well. It is deer resistant.
