The highly fragrant flowers range in color from white through varying shades of pink to purple and maroon. They are densely packed with many petals, often quartered, and the form tends to be cupped to flat.
Flowers occur all in one flush in late spring/early summer, with no repeat later in the season. In hot climates flowering may be continuous.
Habits tend to be lax and drooping, with open spiny growth usually to 4-5'.
Most people today, hearing "cabbage rose", imagine spherical incurved flowers like those of the hybrid perpetuals, depicted by Tenniel in his illustrations of Alice Through the Looking-Glass. But these centifolia roses open cupped to flat.
