During the summer, this species breeds on the lakes of the northwoods in Alaska, Canada, and the northern USA. I have seen and heard them numerous times on vacation in central and northern Minnesota. In early morning and evening one hears their wonderful calls. They have at least two different calls and one other kind of sound. They dive deep into the lakes to feed on fish. In winter, the eastern population winter along the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic off FL, where they lose some of their summer color.
