We have these birds down the street from my house at the park. The park is 64 acres running about a mile along the Grand River. The park also has lagoons and ponds.
The bird is not seen often. I usually hear it first and then follow the call but sometimes they lead me on a long walk before I get to see them.

For a bird that's so widespread, this one is seldom seen, at least by yours truly. The best place to see or even interact with them in my area is on the jetty at the Bonnabel Boat Launch in Metairie, LA. They perch in young live oak trees, and I found at least one I could walk right up to and photograph as it blithely ignored me. I hope to see one of these diminutive warriors catching a fish someday.

The Belted Kingfisher male only has one belt, the female has a second lower reddish-brown belly band.
