I have found rotten hardwood logs with dozens of larvae and several adults. I am keeping many of the grubs in captivity to see if I can get adults from them.

A big black beetle, over an inch long, with lengthwise grooves on the wings. Fairly common in well-rotted logs. Can be handled; I've never been pinched. Fun to show the kids!
