They are absolutely harmless. I don't believe they are spiders at all. I do believe they hunt the more dangerous ones though. Even the brown recluse. If you find one in your house, don't kill it. Just carefully pick it up by a leg and deliver it outside. However if it jerks too much the leg will snap off.
Kids used to pull the legs off to watch them jump around by themselves. (but not me) ;)
