A lovely addition to any butterfly garden. In south Texas this hairstreak enjoys nectaring on croton and often times numerous individuals can be seen on the same plant.

Wing span: 7/8 - 1 5/16 inches (2.2 - 3.3 cm).
Identification: Undersides of both forewing and hindwing gray-brown with the inner edge of the postmedian line edged narrowly on its inner edge with red-orange. Eyespot at anal angle of hindwing with amount of orange equal to the amount of black.
Life history: Caterpiller dark brown with 2 black dorsal lines and long, dark brown hairs.
Flight: Two flights. January-April and June-July.
Caterpillar hosts: Dead leaves, fruits, and other organic matter on the ground particularly under trees of the family Anacardiaceae.
Habitat: Lowland forest edges, valley bottom.
Range: Eastern, southeastern, and central Texas. Rarely also found in west-central Texas.
