This morning I was outside and 2 of these mediterranean red bugs were eating a May fly.

Thanks to your site I identified the Red Bug. Under OBS since about 14 June 2011. In and around the CA/MEX border mountain region 50 miles from the coast. Found living in an underground nest (Hive?). Come above ground at early morning after sunrise, hide during heat of day, (high temps around 95-110F), and back above ground as sun is setting, hide all night. Temperature sensitive, prolific breeder, all ages and sizes from same burrow. Gestation/hatching time not known, but since under OBS have had 5 (FIVE) batches of young appear. No diet OBS, but living near sparse wild alfalfa and many succulants under CA pepper trees. My winter coldness reaches +15F. I don't want to risk my plant collection, so I sprayed with Malathion and am active searching for other nests.
