Very approachable for photos. Can be found perched over water on reed tips and on the ground in the vicinity of water. Very striking color and wing patterns makes it easy to spot from a distance. The posted picture was taken on 25 Sept 2007 at the Bitter Lake NWR, near Roswell, N.M. See "Dragonflies through Binoculars", by Sidney Dunkle or "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States", by John C. Abbott for specifics regarding range and identifying marks.
