Hentz's Striped Scorpion

Very Negative! I was stung by one of these last night when I took my dog outside before going to bed. Lesson learned: If you let the dog outside around midnight and are barefooted on the back porch, watch your feet, not the dog. It felt much like a yellow jacket sting feels - an instant explosion of severe pain. There was just a little swelling, much like that caused by a fire ant bite. After 2 Tylenol the pain was all gone in 2 hours. The pain would go away and then come back suddenly, but it became less and less severe. I realized the pain was gone while I was on the Internet. I was trying to find out what kind of scorpion I had seen when I looked down to see what was causing such pain. There is no sign of the sting this morning, no swelling, no itch, no red mark, nothing. I found a... read more picture on another site that looked just like the tiny monster that got my big toe. It was called a Florida Striped Scorpion - Centruroides Hentzi. There are 4 kinds of scorpions that are native to Florida. Apparently none of them do permanent damage to an adult, but a small child might have a very bad reaction. It might be wise to take a small child for professional medical care if any allergic symptom is noticed other than the pain and/or just a little swelling at the sting site. Better safe than sorry.

Will try to add a pic as soon as I find another scorpion (it's been about a year), no real need to fear these guys. I have known people to be stung by them, even in front of me. All say it is like a wasp sting.
