Basically a three inch flying cockroach. I have seen some over 6 inches. They fly very awkwardly and are attracted to any bright object from fire to people with lighter skin tone. The grubs can kill a tree by devouring the roots. Mature insects appear during summer monsoons in the desert southwest.

This is about the biggest beetle in my area, measuring three inches long, appearing during the monsoon season, late Summer.
