Banded Orange Heliconian (Dryadula phaetusa) is a rare stray to south Texas only. A good sized butterfly that has bright orange with dark brown cross bands on topside of wings. Similar markings on underside of wings with white bands and small crescent markings along bottom of hindwings. Body is orange. Larval host is passion vines. One made a rare appearance at a local butterfly park in early December. The butterfly was in pristine condition...so not sure if it flew over from Mexico or eclosed here.
