Common butterfly, the only other that might be confuse for it is the other form, Red Spotted Purple but both is now consider one species with two distinct forms and a third form - in Minnesota the White Admiral is the most common though I have seen the Red Spotted Purple form once in a while. Hybrids of the two forms occurs so colors may vary.

This butterfly used to be quite rare in Newfoundland but in the last few years have shown up more regularly although it is still over uncommon. This butterfly is usually associated with woodlands rather than open fields. It's host plant is birch, poplar and willow and the larvae look like a large bird dropping!
