Positive
There are three subspecies. The most common is 'tircis' and is distributed throughout Europe except for the far north.
The subspecies 'insula': This subspecies differs from the tircis subspecies by having orange and larger pale patches on the upperside. This subspecies occurs on the Isles of Scilly.
The subspecies 'oblita': This subspecies is larger that the subspecies tircis, is darker and has paler white patches on the underside. This subspecies occurs in western Scotland.

They are supposed to be shy but when used to you they are trusting. Birds are their predators and some have pieces torn from their wings.
