Have seen this butterfly in San Diego, but most recent encounter was at a live butterfly exhibit at the Living Desert in Palm Desert.
I happened to be wearing white socks that day, and a Painted Lady landed on one of my socks. I was told by one of the attendants that this butterfly is attracted to white flowers.

After seeing so many on some rotting fruit I put out, I think I can safely say that they are fruit feasters!

One of the most widespread butterflies, found on every continent except Antarctica. Some favorite larval plants are artemesia, thistle, and nettles. These butterflies really seem to enjoy zinnias, marigolds, and coneflowers!
They have such beautiful outer wings that look completely different from the inner. The outer wings are subtle, with browns and a hint of bright coral. The inner wings remind me of calico fabric. These butterflies seem a little shy about being photographed, but did get used to me after awhile.
