Although the adults seem to be foliage eaters, I've never seen them in great enough numbers to be a threat. Fruit trees and grape vines are said to be the preferred plants.

Found throughout eastern North America, south to FL, but generally not in FL around deciduous forests, eggs are laid in the fallen leaves. Larvae feed on the living roots of various trees and shrubs. Adults emerge to fly from June through Sept, depending on location.
