This wasp is often confused with Common Yellow Jacket, Eastern Yellow Jacket, and German Yellow Jacket. It among with other aerial yellow jacket species, the only yellow Yellow Jacket in the Eastern United States that builds its nest above the ground much like Bald Face hornet. Bald Face Hornet is consider part of the Yellow Jacket family but is different into its is larger and have white stripes instead of yellow. Eastern Yellow Jacket and Common Yellow Jacket nest underground while German Yellow Jacket nest like honey bees, preferring cavities.
