Hymenoptera (part 1)
Ants
Ants evolved from wasps and consist of approximately 22,000 species worldwide. They have been found on every landmass on Earth except for Antarctica and a few remote islands. These insects live in colonies supported by worker ants and a queen that can live up to 30 years. Ants go dormant during winter months, but remain active all year in the tropics. They defend themselves by biting or stinging. Ants are scavengers and are mostly attracted to sugary foods along with grains, grasses, leaves, vegetables and even other insects.
