A question has come up in the rose forum. Will a virused lily infect non-lily plants? I've been playing around planting lilies thru my roses so could affect me. Lily is not virused but i'm just needing to know. thanks.
2009 Blooms Yeah!
Will a virused lily infect non-lily plants?
It depends. At least some viruses that infect tulips, for instance, can infect lilies and vice versa. But they are more closely related than roses and lilies. Most pathogens tend to stick to related genera (kinds of plants), but as most things in nature, it is not a steadfast rule.
So to answer your question: Can a virused lily infect roses? - most likely not. But can a virused lily infect a tulip or crocus? More likely than a rose. And more importantly, the same answer goes for the flip side: most likely, a virused rose cannot infect a lily.
But remember, these are only probabilities, and not yes or no answers.
First to be on the safe side, dig them up, pot them and keep them separate from your other lilies. Do all of them show the splotching like the first picture you posted? If they all show the splotching you'd best toss them. If it's only one that's showing the splotching, toss it and keep the rest potted up and watch them. You may end up tossing the whole bunch, but this way you'll ease into it if you have too. At least that's what I would do. Someone else may advise you differently and they might have better advice.
The one on the far right seems to look OK. What you can do is segregate your clump for further evaluation. Perhaps separate the best looking from the worst?
Thanks Ticker & Moby. I'll try to be brave, lol. (it's) Time to do the right thing!
Be strong! ;)
I pulled a bunch of my lilies up that I thought were virused and put them in a secluded place. The ended up being OK....it seems the bed I had them in is where my DH plows.
Salt from the road mixed with the snow and landed on this bed. That is the only thing I can think of as they look fine in their new home. Has anyone else had that problem with salt getting in the bed??
Those look luscious!

Sorry Lily_love wasn't paying attention to what State you lived in!! lol
I'm sure you haven't a need for 'salt' like we do here in the North, that'll teach me to pay attention!!!
No problem Pixie, I'm proud to have liliums in my garden since it's terribly hot here. We do occassionally get snow fluries, but never enough to warrant salt and other safety measures as you do up North. Boys, let me tell you. Here is another of those yellow lilies which I've marked as 'Star Gazer' doh!
Your lily is stunning with that clem! Nice combo!
I agree with Pixie, that if very nice. Your misfortune in that lilly not being Stargazer turned out for the best in this instance. :) Very nice.
They are both beauties, bamagirl.
Wow, that is orange - very nice!
Thank you! Yes, the orange is really bright, so bright that it almost looks neon.
Should we start a new thread since this one is getting long? I will start one! ^_^
