2009 Blooms Yeah!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Everyone ^_^ This year has been far better thus far for lilies though the season has really just started, so I am excited about that. I didn't get as good of a daffodil show among certain varieties as last - many of them blasted for some reason and not sure why. This spring has not been exceptionally warm or anything compared to normal as a rule.

Jamie, yes I think John Scheepers (or Van Engelen) is one of the absolute best when it comes to buying lilies in bulk for large plantings. The London bulbs I remember distinctly - were HUGE, almost as big as baseballs. I just looked at their website and last year they were 50 for $67, which is outstanding. I love the Washington and Oregon growers myself but can't always justify the prices, especially for large plantings of common bulbs, so JS/VE or even Brent and Becky are good choices for those. If you haven't used them before I think you would be very pleased. The bud counts this second spring are really high with lots of evidence of multiplication.

Wow, that area will be so bright you'll need to wear sunglasses to work out there! It's going to be a traffic stopper when they're all open.

I always look for end of season sales on bulbs

Steve, your grouping looks beautiful. I have never been one to plant in mass. I guess what counts as planting in mass in my yard is a grouping of three or something like my 'Samur' that turns into its own grouping of 15 or 20 from a single bulb. If I love a lily, I may buy a couple of them over time and I won't likely plant them next to each other even. It's one of those things, like a recurring pattern, that as I walk through the yard I want to see it again on my journey ;)

The mass plantings are truly breathtaking though. Steve your yard must just get better and better every year.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

come on you early birds more pics please

Thanks Tracey - I think it is cool that we all have our own planting styles and everyone puts a unique bent on his/her lily plantings. One advantage to how you plant is you always have a nice succession of blooms - when you plant en masse, unless you mix a few other things in somewhere, when you're fished you're finished - even though while in bloom it can be reall breathtaking. It's an all-or-nothing show. I know than many of you, and definitely you, Tracey, have a much greater variety of lilies than I do and many more "unusual" forms. I did order some pendant Asiatics as I saw Donna post some and I know you have - so excited to see them bloom.

Look what you gave me that popped up and is in bloom. It is still realy short though. How tall did yours get? Huge, striking flowers and really draws attention. Hopefully it'll be a little taller next year.

scicciarella, I am on vacation this week (kind of - still in touch with work - great American way I guess, sigh) - but I haven't even gotten dressed yet. I will see if anything has opened that is new!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

thanks since mine are only about six inches tall this is the only way for me to see the bloom thanks

oh and I never get dressed unless I have to go out lol my sweat pants and tank tops are to comfy, lol hahahahhaha

Steve, 'Tiny Sensation' is a very short variety. The Tiny Series are known for their abundance of blooms on a very short stalk. I think they get a foot high or so. It's a shortie ;) Sure do the like color combo in that lily.

pard, how I envy you and all of your future garden quests. Schreiners is a place that my family has ordered iris from for generations. And Adelmans? What can I say? Peonies in full bloom would be a true paradise for me. Do take pictures for us and post them. I hope you get some goodies to take home.

Ahhhh, vacation! Enjoy, even with remote access ;)

Albertarosey, someone else suggested "Toronto" and it does kind of resemble that one. May-be! ^_^ Those are both pretty.

Here is a bright red I found opened up today...

Sorry to tell you honey, but that lily looks virused. :(

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Moby, you maybe onto something. I did notice some weird deformed blooms on this one. Okay time to dig it up. Discard bulbs, dirt and all? I detest those virus!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Steve I love the mass of yellows!
How is z3 getting lilies? Inside a GH???

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yes, lily-love ~ get rid of it all and don't compost it. Looks like it might be Cancun.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

i'm having computer troubles, can't download pics. Peach trumpet is blooming, so pretty
Steve, the yellow-fest is gorgeous
sorry lily, I recently had to yank 3-4 virused ones.

Tomah, WI

I had to dig my Green Queen. Boo Hooooo. New from Buggy last fall. Didn't even get to see it bloom. I hate lily virus.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh thats so sad!! I like to at least see the bloom once before I have to pull it.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Um, are you sure it was virused? Maybe it was just weather stressed??

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

How do you know Green Queen was virused?

Tomah, WI

Picture is of Green Queen after being dug for a couple of days, so it liiks wilty. The leaves were curling under very
severely. If this is not virused, please let me know as I'd love to be able to keep her.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Hard to say ~ I'd at least let it grow out this year and see how it looks.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, I wouldn't toss it just yet. It has been a strange spring...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I would not toss out a Buggy bulb before growing it out either (it would just about tear me to pieces) . I may also send Buggy a picture of the growth and ask her what she thinks. Just a thought. 'Green Queen' is adorable!

Tomah, WI

Should I try to grow it out in a pot, or back in the garden bed?

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Many lilies have leaves that curl under when they are first emerging. I am assuming Green Queen is a trumpet lily or Orientpet? If so, that is normal. In addition, Buggycrazy has an excellent reputation.

Tomah, WI

Oh, please do not misunderstand. I am in no way implying that Buggy is in any way responsible. I am one of her biggest fans.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Mattsmom,

It's nice of you to clarify, but I didn't take your note to imply criticism of Buggy. I would put it in a pot in a location where I will see it easily. Then you can give it attention without a lot of hassle. When I have a lily I want to monitor that's what I do. Then if you like you can overwinter it in a somewhat isolated spot. If it turns out to be a happy camper, back to the main bed it goes.

Donna

Tomah, WI

Thanks for the advice! I sure would hate to loose her. I'll get her potted up right away.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks pixie, Nery...I had to leave this morning at about 9 am to start driving to the IA roundup which is this Fri-Sat. I am staying in this nasty motel north of Kansas City tonight. Yuck. Oh well, at least they have high speed internet. I stopped in this town called Cameron and there were two choices above Motel 6. Hopefully I will not wake up scratching.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL!!

Donna

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Lol!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

'Green Queen' is an oriental lily.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

'Green Queen' is an oriental lily.

In that case, even new leaves should not be curling back. But really, that's not a common indication of virus. It's good that you salvaged it.
