Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #24

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Am on the google sheet right now. Foudn a button on the side that says who on and view and there a little message box. I just tried it out.

Not sure if it workign or not, but if it is woudl eb good for people to leave messag emaybe for seeds to be added too if ya want.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Hey, that was you!? Sometimes I can see names, and sometimes not. I think if you sign in I see a name.
Definitely good for a message if I'm on, like now. Not sure if it stays when I go.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I just went to look at it and my computer froze! Maybe just a coincidence?

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

hope so :( It's getting big, but not that big!

Right now it has a pretty random assortment listed, since it came from seeds I have, and seeds listed in the info from Fairy and Dryad. Hopefully when we get done going through the website we're using (Success with seed) it will flesh out some, but feel free to let me know any obvious one's we're missing!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL Fairy - it probably froze in shock!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

These are all the seeds w/ germ info I have on my SS from last year-so if you want it emailed, just dmail me...

Hay all, I got my box yesterday and you want to talk about making my day!!! It took me 2 hours just to go thru and organize them all. Today I will go thru and see what I can get started now and what I will have to wait a few more weeks on. I really can't think all of you enough! This will put my gardens back together and then some. Take care all and happy planting to everyone!

LOL Caren. Have fun and hoep ya get to see your Southern home gardens rebuilt again.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I was able to get to her sheet... nifty idea... i'm trying to fill in all the missing data form mine... though i've got just over 200 seeds.. so it's tedious work... but i may too, upload mine.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

I did get my box yesterday finally. Picked it up from the mailbox on the way back from the movies ... so 9pm at night. I had a nice time looking at all the seeds and thinking hummmm, yes, I remember requesting that one. All were labeled nice enough for me!
I seperated them into 3 piles ... food seeds, seeds to be planted immediatly, others. :o)

Thanks again Ella for doing this!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Foudn this one from ILoveJesus on the other thread and had to chuckle. Thought ya might too from one of our suvirors.

"Oh my Gosh. Was I the biggest piggy aka HOG. Got mine and it is better than Christmas.

Thanks everyone so very much.
Love you all.
Sandy"

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Terese, I remember squealing loudly for your red flax, but now that I've got it I don't remember what to do with it. A brief Google search isn't giving me much....can you describe if for me again? If I remember right it's an annual?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I had it in my head that someone grew Alonsoa meridionalis (Mask Flower) as an annual. I got some seed from Tuink, have any of you grown them? They're a tender perennial.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

yes... it is an annual. and I have to tell you... i got it in a "mix" so my seeds were just broadcasted. i cleared an area of weeds... raked it a tad [it's out back in the field, so it's not perfect] and i just scattered the seeds... nothing special. i did not even water, as my hose does not go back that far.

this year, i plan to take half and WS some then direct sow the other half. i am also hoping some come back from fallen seeds.

that was the same for the Blue too. though blue is a perennial.

teh plants, for the Red/Scarlet do get big... probably 24-36" tall by 18-24" wide. So i will probably sow the seeds far enough apart that i can transplant each individual seedling.

here's the PF link http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/228/

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I don't know if anyone remembers back when the seed swap started, me saying I might have to move, but I have absolutely wonderful news! It looks as though we are staying right where we are! I am so happy I just had to share : )

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

TCS...
While logging in all my new seeds :-), I ran across a log for my some of my shrubs. It seems that I have "Wine and Roses", not "Midnight Wine". I knew it was wine... I happen to like it ;-). It is taller than Midnight, but basically the same look. If my DH didn't run it over with his car 2 years, mine would be bigger. It's amazing that he see's that cinderblock now ;-P. LMK if you'd like me to still root some for you. It's not a problem. Andrea http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55689/

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Yay Meredith! Now you can sow seeds and plant to your hearts content and know that they will still be yours next year!

Thanks for the flax info Terese. I don't know why it was running in my mind that I could use them in containers...I suppose I still could if I used them by themselves?

Neal - I got some seed from Suzy (check out her entry in PF) last year but didn't have any luck with them. I bought some this year from Summer Hill and intend to try them again.

LOL have you noticed how the chatting has been greatly reduced on this thread? About the only time people pipe up now is to ask questions about what they got in the mail.

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh, that's great Meredith! I told my DH if we ever moved, that I would rent a truck just to haul half the plants here and all the rest of the crap that I have. I told him it would save him thousands in the long run :-)

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

OMGosh Andrea that's beautiful.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks guys! I know that is what I would do too mygypsyrose! Now I can start all these seeds I got! I already got them all down on a spreadsheet and put them in seperate baggies acording to what to start first : )

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Terese, I bet it was you I recall mentioning growing them. I'm really happy to hear they take care of themselves. The seed is kinda small, so I'll probably opt for wintersowing them too.

Meredith, Great news! Glad to hear you can focus on seed starting instead of moving :-)

La, how did you sow the ones from Suzy?

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Neal I think Terese's response was to me and the flax.

I remember I started them inside, but I just moved last year's spread sheet onto a jump drive (I include pictures and it was hogging up too much space) so I'm not sure on the particulars.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Glad you don't have to move away from your garden, Meredith! : )
My DH is a weed whacking fool. He even ran over a young oak tree with his tractor once, and killed the volunteer walnut I had been protecting. I hadn't thought of using Cinder blocks, I just used big rocks, evidently not big enough. Maybe the old bird cage next time? Oh well.
I'm still going through and listing the seed and who sent it and when I received it. Will have to check out some of those links better tomorrow so I know what to plant, what to stick in the fridge, and what to plant later. One step at a time.
Had to refill the bottom waterer today. It was mostly dry yesterday, but everything was really soggy, so I waited til today. Still moist, just not soggy today. I did take photos, but silly me! I forgot to put the storage card back in the camera, so I didn't actually get any photos! : (
Next time!
WIB,
SW

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

gemini_sage,
DH just gave me your envelope with the lupine seed! Thank you. I will direct sow. Was looking for them where they came up last year, but they haven't come up yet so there may still be time. Do these need soaking or nicking before planting? I can't remember. But will direct sow instead attempting to transplant. Will definitely take lots of photos. : ) With the data card. : )
WIB,
SW

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Singingwolf ,
You are so cute even with our fog you are rolling on I wish you fields of flowers and Blessings, and if the lupine's grow way over can see you smiling and blessing those seeds all the way home.
And They always come home!
Hugs,
Carolyn

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Andrea -- huge thanks for the offer... but the reason i wanted that other one... aside from the gorgeous color.. is it's size. i need a short shrub. I'm putting SUn Power Hosta behind it ... so i need it about 12" short.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Andrea,
Could I use that in a foundation planting? It looks lovely, but some of the comments says it dies completely back so I wasnt sure. I would love to have a piece of it - if you don't mind....

genna

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

LeBug,
Wanted to let you know am still watching over as well as the rest on here you are not gonna let that Doctor think your not at his window cause you are , hope all is going well and they see you on top of his care hope you got your call and can enjoy your seed cause I want all to know there is no seed this wonderful woman can not get to grow. Your a great person remenber that and your strenght will flow through okay.
Blessing,
Carolyn

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the well wishes everyone! We have had a huge weight taken off our shoulders here. : )

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Terese, I think there's a peewee version of Weigela - at least I could swear I recall one from the days I worked for a garden center. It got to about 12-18". It wasn't as dark as the Wine and Roses, the leaves were a brighter green and the blooms more pink - but it was a double bloomer so you'd get flowers in spring and fall.

Edited to add - found it!
http://www.naturehills.com/product/my_monet_weigela.aspx

Thanks for letting me know the red flax gets so large! I'm the kind of gal who tends to not pay close enough attention to that kinda stuff - LOL!

Meredith - congrats on not needing to move! Yippee!!

And yep, the conversations will switch real fast now - as soon as we all figure out what we've got there will be more discussion of starting medium, when to start what, containers, light and heat, and location, location, location - LOL! It's kind of like the conversation before, during, and after Thanksgiving dinner.....that lull while we cram our piggy faces before the chatter starts back up again.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks dryad, Now I can be excited to see all the stuff I started from our last swap flower for the first time! Plus I added a bunch of new daffodils - pink and yellow ones..... I am so excited to see those!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Robin -- the one i am gonna get is Midnight Wine, 12-18" tall and deep burgundy foliage.

I wanted yellow and purple in my front yard... first the thought of the Sun Power hosta, then i had to find a purple shrub... the Weigela fits the bill.

Terese

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Ah - yep, that's a beauty. Those weigela really are hard to beat for a great shrub. I think the only other two I like as much are Deutzia and Oak Leaf and/or Panicle Hydrangea. I'm planning on loving Purple Beautyberry in the near future though, if I can get those puppies to sprout!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

What do you guys think of my Rubidor Weigelia? http://davesgarden.com/tools/blog/viewimage.php?did=55187 I thought it was supposed to have red flowers but they don't look red to me, hopefully the hummers like them though. : )

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

No problem Tcs, that's kind of what I thought you might say when I saw the height differences. Good thing I saw it. I didn't realize Midnight wine was only 12inches. Your hosta would definately have some shade. ;-)

Sure thing Genna :-) I can get that going when spring rolls around. I think they were refering to dieback in zones that got heavy winters. The only dieback I've seen so far were the ones from my DH's tires. So I can give you a better estimate this spring. (Unless he manages to run it over again this winter)

Meredith.... That's a pretty one!

Dryad... I have the Fuzzy Deutzia and that's on the top of my list of favorite shrubs. It's absolutely beautiful when loaded with flowers. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/79535/

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Terese, did I read your post above right? Thought the first part was replying to me about the Mask Flower and the last part to La about the Red Flax (the answer to which I'm also interested :-).

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Great news Merdith. yep I remmebr ya worryign about it.

LOL. Ya I know it a vicious cycyle of oinking iek crazy, eyeys glued to every post. The anticipation and wait for the mailman and dissapointment when nothign comes in the mail that day to..

Joys of exuberance and happy dances and at times over welmining of what did I do and how in the owrld amI gonan grow all thes e and the confusion of where do I start and when do I start to....

Ok, it looke dgood, sounded good, and I oinked, now what do I do with it beside look at it. LOL

This a dumb question but was hopign the last coupel piggie s woudl get their boxes today but ther enoschool today with it being MLK holiday and tommorrow is innaugaration , so is there no mail and po's open for the next two days????? Don't want to make long drive to town to po to mail the few forgotten seeds out if they closed. If anybody can tell me for sure would apprciate it.

I too want to thank everybody for the stuff they sent me. I admit it I broke down and cheated and just had to open one of my packages up. These seed sbeen callignand callign and during the night they been mocking me and wispering to me as I walk past them a dozen times durign the day and then ya all so busy makign spread sheets and lists that .. I turned wimp. I was weak.. Hopefully this one package wil hold me til the long flyer gets there. But right now... I wouldn't put any bets on it. heheheheheh ( need a giant sheepish smiley)

Oh can we have new thread too please. Purtey please..... : )

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good morning :)

I'm not as fast as some of you, who have your seeds all sorted already! I'm working on it now. Was there a mention of spread sheet layouts somewhere? I had gotten a sample from one person (gram) last year and I never organized myself to starting one yet.

I used Microsoft word last year to list all my swap seeds with photos and info, which seemed fine at the time. Now, this year I'm starting a new file and will be replanting some of the same species, but don't want to keep repeating the plant info. Any suggestions for a spreadsheet that can be updated annually would be much appreciated :)

LynnW, I love your homemade seed pouch :) I don't even have a working sewing machine here....just have some spools of thread and a few needles.

Gotta tell ya .. I've never even heard of Mask Flower. Wish i could help ya out on that, but I was replying to Lala_J about the Red Flax... sorry to have gotten your hopes up.

Did you happen to take a peek at Clothiers database? it's pretty extensive.

Terese

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Here's what he has to say -- > Sow at 20ºC (68ºF), germinates in less than two wks

**edited to add

Alonsoa warcewicsii 'peachy keane' Mask flower scarlet orn out less than 2 wks @ 65ºF, rapid germ. -6 surf 18 hha fsun

OK -- he didnt have A LOT of info... but it looks like .... if sowing indoors... 6 weeks before last frost. Germinates quickly at 65° [less than 2 week] spacing 18" he did not list height. Half hardy annual, plant in full sun.

HTH.
