Post your early bloomers

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Doss what is the name of your pci?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Any iris is ok Don!!! That's a really pretty one.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

I don't know the name, but this one bloomed for me the day before Easter. I don't think I have had any bloom this early before. I once had them all marked, then lost all the ids when I moved.

Love seeing all these blooms! I divided a lot of mine last fall, so am anxious to see if they bloom for me this year.

Wow, cactuspatch. That is a beauty. I bet it looks nice in your cactus patch! And it is early. I just returned from Los Angeles and they aren't blooming there yet either!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

Very nice cactuspatch - I love the color, striping and beard.... Very very nice!

I believe that the PCI is 'Widescreen' but I wouldn't put any money on it.

Soulja that is amazing!!
I need to move some where where I can grow the PCI's.

South Hamilton, MA

Be careful not to plant too many plants in the same area. Iris need good air circulation tp keep desease away.

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

hi iris people- i haven't dropped in for a while- but i just love the pictures here when i get a chance. I have a question for
Irisloverdee!
Do you think PCI's can grow on the east coast zone 5?? I had thought not, but then I read in the All Things Iris catalog that they are hardy to zone 4 or maybe even zone 3! http://www.allthingsiris.com/pacificcoast3.html
could this be true?? I would LOVE to grow some! Sarah

Lebanon, OR

I know of a few people in colder than 6-7 growing them...
The thing with PCI's is that it takes a while for them to get established so get the less expensive one you can find in the beginning and it is worth the try

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks D- I know I won't be able to resist trying!

There was a PCI program in Maine, but the hyper-cold winter of 2003-04 did them in. Hybridizer did not start again as then in his late 80s he decided not to start over. Now in early 90s works with JI & sib.

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

My first Iris. I purchased several two years ago from the Phoenix Chapter of the Iris Society. They didn't bloom the first year so I was sure surprised to find this one this morning. Needless to say, unfortunately, they are all now NOID's. I think I'll take my pictures to the next sale to see if anyone can ID them for me.

pajaritomt, yep it would look nice in the cactuspatch, but after the cactus bloom they are still pretty and some get beautiful wine colored pears. The iris aren't so pretty after blooming! Plus I think the rabbits may eat the iris if they were out with my cactus? : )

irisloverdee, those are such pretty blooms. What does PCI stand for? Do they need cold winters?

Champaign, IL(Zone 5b)

First Iris and first flower of the year, beat the crocus by a day. Sorry its such a poor picture, but the weather is horrid and the camera didn't want to focus on the flower.

PCI stands for Pacific Coast Iris and they don't need cold winters. They seem pretty picky to me though. If they make it they are wonderful.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Thanks Doss for that explanation! Mine are all probably easy care as I don't do anything special for them and they bloom on and on.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Cactus I was told they will not grow in my enviroment. (the PCI's) Not fair!!

Lebanon, OR

PCI are a wonderful iris but as I have experienced, year before last planted 30, by end of last year had 10 planted them in the ground, and to date 4 have started to grow.

Once they get established they do super...have several very large clumps and several need to be divided this year...going to try something with them and that is to pot them up and she how they do then.

D

Are they worth it YES...I love them

Houma, LA

I woke up to this one this morning. It is the first iris bloom of the season.
