Post-Op Bariatric Proceedure III

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

OMG Tplant you're coming into the range where you and my husband weigh the same! That's unbelievable! Good job!!!!

Question: under what circumstances would you want to reverse the procedure? When you're at your target weight? Do you think if you went somewhere I might go, like a restaurant, you'd be ok with a diet soda and salad now, that you've retraineed your tastebuds and your eyes and your feeling of fullness? Or are you still relying on your tiny stomach to help control yourself? This sounds a little offensive when I read it back. I guess I'm asking at this point, when yoou've come so far, how much is the mechanical restriction of your stomach and how much is the new you from the neck up?

Bravo, Carrie

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

By the way, Tplant, I noticed something you said a few posts up. At 10:55 am you said "If this works for a 69 year old disabled man that can not excersise can you imagine how it would work for a normal person?" T, you are normal, I am normal. I like to call people without a disability either Temporarily Able-Bodied (TAB) or 'ordinary'. Normal is not the opposite of disabled. !!

Carrie,

I have always heard that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. If this is true, Ted has already accomplished that. The key is to not take another 21 days to reform an old or a different habit.

I think of this in terms of smoking. It only takes a minute actually to reform that old habit. I have to tell myself after 4 years, that I would REALLY Be STUPID to go back to smoking after all that time.

Sorry Ted, I was only referring to myself for the stupid thing, I was stupid for over 33 years and trying not to revert back to stupid.

You are doing a fantastic job!!!!!!!!! I am so happy for you.

Hi Carrie --- Just got back from my Publix Supermarket. Had to buy zinc tablets as per my doctors instruction to prevent hair loss. I noticed my comb had some hair in it and I brought it to his attention. He said it was a temporary happening and I should take zinc to enrich the hair. Also I purchased some glucosomine-chondriton for my shoulders as they are getting stiff because of my arthritis and our two weeks of rainy weather has not helped any.
To answer your questions:
1) I would not want to reverse the proceedure but in very rare cases their may be a rejection of the band and it must be removed.
2) I don't look at food nor eat food anymore for it's taste but for it's nutritional value only. My stomach can only hold about 2-4oz of meat(protein) so this is the reason for protein drinks. When I go to restaurants I only order an appetizer or a bowl of soup and that is it. No diet coke as it is carbonated and what that does is blow up the stomach pouch thus making more room for food which I do not want. The worst thing an obese person can do is drink with his meal. Drink non carbonated beverage like water or flavored sugar free water. It is delicious. When I reach my goal my band will be re-adjusted to maintain my weight and once done should be complete. However if I do gain weight there will be another adjustment as I need it.
3) Yes it is a mechanical restriction but one that I love! Just now I do believe that I've had about all the adjustment necessary until I reach my goal of 200lbs or so. I don't look at it as some may as this is now the true me and not the morbidly obese person I used to be. Internally, I feel no different from anyone else. It is just that I can't eat as much.
4) As far as normal is concerned I was referring to an individual that can be active as I can not. There is an excercise regimen that was included with the cost($400) for lifetime membership in the health and nutritional program at the hospital which I can not participate in except for the nutritional classes and they are excellent. Meanwhile "Bon Appetite"

Molly,

Even after 4 years, quitting smoking after 33 years is AMAZING! Nicotine, and the junk they mix it with, is SO ADDICTIVE! Think about being smart, because yoou did something brave AND smart!

Three cheers for us all!

MollyMc ---- Good to hear from you again! You are in Strawberry country so try growing them again? I always thought it was 30 days to break a habit but I wanted this so bad that I did exactly what the doctor said though it was not easy being on a liquid diet for six weeks prior to having the surgery but after the first two days it became much easier and my outlook on junk food started to change. I used to eat a pint of ice cream a day plus other fattening foods and never ate fruit. Now I eat a large quantity of fruit especially melons and cherries. I eat about a pound of cherries per day and one and a half watermelon per week with honeydew and cantaloupe mixed in as a salad or eaten individually. It is amazing the amount of fruit I can eat and the amount of drinks I can drink but only a couple of ounces of meat fills me up. Anymore than that and I regurgitate but not so with fruit and drink?

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Ted,

I am not sure about strawberry country. All the ones I bought and put in last spring died. But it could be because I grow things in sand. Come next spring, I have a new plant for my edibles gardens. Lots of amendments tilling and maybe a straw bale or two. Still working on that plant.

Hi there!
I've been to Wisconsin and back and am just now getting caught up with emails, forums, etc.

T, I wanted to tell you about a great product for hair loss that comes with this weight loss.

It's called 'folicure' and is available at Sally's Beauty Supply. You buy a set of 12-15 (I forget exactly) little vials of folicure and use 1/2 of a vial every 2 or 3 days when you wash your hair. The set costs about $15 and is worth every penny. One go-round for me and my hair was back to its old self.

You sure are doing GREAT !

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Granny! I mentioned the excess hair in my comb to my doctor and he told me to take zinc and it is a common occourance but only temporary.
Not much to say today as I weighed myself and it still(scale)says 267 meaning no weight loss since the huge 4lb loss of last week but I guess it will happen as this is the second time of 0 weight loss in the past few weeks. It must be a natural transaction! However I am still very happy and can feel the difference in my walk and especially when I rise from a sitting position.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

T - just popping in to say keep up the terrific work! xxxxx, Carrie

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Twenty-five years ago when I weighed 267 I was in a lot better shape than I'm in now. But still in all, I do feel younger and not in pain like I used to be. I started taking Glucosamone-Chondriton @ 1500 mg twice a day. I'm hoping it will ease the stifness and discomfort in my shoulders. Miraculously my ankle that used to give me such terrific pain from a prior surgery of fifty years ago (arthritis) no longer bothers me?

Tplant
You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Congrats on your continued progress. :-)
Hugs&blessings ... Elaine

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you Elaine. I am feeling far better than I thought possible. Never realized that obesity could be so self destructive. Like many, I was told so by doctors but took it with a grain of salt -- so to say. My shoulders still bother me but not as painful as they used to be. I have been recently informed that is most likely part of my PPS. (Post Polio Syndrome) This, unfortuneately, will not get any better as it is an after effect of the original polio that I had as a child.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I feel great today though 0 weight loss over last week's 267 but I am shrinking! My pants are getting larger and my belt went in another notch. Doctor said there would be times like this and not to get discouraged. Don't worry I said, there isn't anything that would discourage me pertaining to my weight loss as I know it has to happen.
Oh, I went to a foot specialist yesterday as I developed an ingrown toe nail and it became very painful. They trimmed my nails and removed any callouse on my feet and of course took care of my TWO ingrown nails. I thought it was only one but there were two on my left foot. Because of my large belly I could never trim my nails properly and thus the ingrown nails. Boy Oh Boy! Another problem that can be blaimed on obesity!
With all the heat we've been having in the mid 90's I have not been active in my garden. This is my most important type of excercise and also as a result I have not been drinking enough water which is so essential for weight loss. I'll try to do better this week as my feet feel wonderful and I can walk normally.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Dear twinkletoes (Tplant),
It just gets better and better doesn't it? I think even with no loss this week, the rise in your comfort level tells the story even more than the scales. It's really neat that you have such a grasp on the overall picture......so now go drink an extra glass of water and be COOL, it's waaaaay too hot to think about any outside activity.
Pati

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Think I'll go to Lowes and browse but leave my wallet home!

Shhhh, don't let the DH hear you say that? He might just take the hint, and then where would I be? I'd have to send the 2X4 after you for putting that notion in his head. :-)

So glad to see things are still going so well. Even when I don't post, you're still in my T&P's.
~Elaine~

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank You..

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

No progress again this week! Still 267?? The only change in my diet has been the addition of fresh cherries for the past three weeks. I must admit I do love cherries and I have been gourgeing myself on them. It seems I can eat a huge amount of cherries with no feeling of fullness, so now, this must stop! It is back to my watermelons and lots of water. However, I feel very healthy and thinner. I walk much easier and longer now without the usual ankle pain. I noticed this last night when I went to Lowes. I hesitated to use an electric cart for mobility but then said to myself "Don't push your luck!"

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh my TPlant, I too have a passion for the wonderful cherries we get here from MI! I always have SUCH good intentions when I buy them, limiting myself to a few a day....and they are expensive so should be a special treat.

Anyway.......I bought 2 1/2 lbs, sat down with the whole bag instead of putting my "ration" in a cup, and ate the whole bag!!!

A loss on the scale is good, but the name of the game is health and feeling good and you seem to have that in control.
Pati

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Pati --- I am a cherry freak and could not believe the amount of cherries that I have been eating. I would buy one or two bags and never look at the cost until the other day when two bags cost me $13.00??? Well I kind of lost my taste for them! $$$ I was eating a bag a day? My diet says to eat all the fresh fruit that I want but omits huge amounts of cherries soooo, that's all for this season but it sure was fun and delicious and I didn't gain any weight. How many people can say that? LOL

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

wonder why cherries...I would think grapes would have a higher sugar content...humm

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Grapes are also a no-no for me! It is all about the sugar content. I can not drink orange juice but I can eat fresh oranges. Sugar, in any form, is my worst enemy as it provides little or no nutritional values. This has to be the reason for my zero weight loss. I will not eat anymore cherries this season and in moderation, if at all, next season. My health, aka weight loss, is a priority. I've come to far to relinquish all for gluttony!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I know I can't eat a lot of grapes...and only drink OJ when my sugar is low it brings it back up quickly without it bouncing. Only juice I can really drink is Apple.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hmm, and frozen apple juice is a substitute for sugar in some "no added sugar so they're good for your kids" health cookies.

T-plant, I agree with Pati, you started this whole adventure to become healthier, and keep your eyes on that prize! If that means fewer cherries, well, we all know you have the discipline!

xxxx, Carrie

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I have totally stopped eating cherries and will not have anymore until next year.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

You've got me craving them now, though!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Having a very hectic day today! Forgot to weigh myself this morning but I did Wednesday and it read 266 down a pound. My dog had bladder surgery and I had to bring her in this AM as she was very sick and vomitting. Everything is normal according to the Vet, meanwhile have an MD appointment at 3pm my time. Talk to you later.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Tplant,

Just wanted to stop in and tell you how proud I am of you and for you. Sorry about your dog ... that being said from someone who "has gone to the dogs".

Hugs,

Judy

Tplant
I sure hope your dog will be ok. Wow Judy ... I like that! The DH tells me I've been hangin round mine tooo long ... so I guess I've gone to em too. LOL
Good luck with *your* doc appointment, also, Tplant.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Went to my GP yesterday for a chronic cough that I have for eternity, so it seems, but it is an allergy of some sort. He gave me a prescription for cough medicene and it sure helped as I am not coughing now or during the night and finally had a good nights sleep. I weighed 168 on his scale and he was shocked to see the loss as I was 190 when he last saw me! Also complained about the pain in my shoulders which is my original arthritis and there really isn't much to be done about that except to use darvocesette which I will when I feel it to be necessary. Aspercreme balm really works very well also. As far as Scooter is concerned she is getting all of my attention and we just got back from the vet and all is well and it will take two weeks for her to heal from bladder surgery.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

T, are you 168 or 268? I might to get a scale like your doctor's ..... tee hee ....

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Granny, I'll bet there's CODEINE in T's cough syrup. He doesn't know what he's saying....
xxxxx, Carrie

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

T I get a sportsgel type stuff at my Chiropractors that's called Biofreeze that is the best stuff ever for arthritis...I can send you some if you'd like.

Saint

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! I meant 268! My attention has been fixed on my best friend "Scooter" and that is all that has been on my mind. She is doing fine today, wish I could say the same about me? My schedule is all messed up but getting back to normal. Lately I've forgot to eat and drink water, so come Friday, I should show some good weight loss. Sorry to be messed up but she means a lot to me as she has always been "unselfishly" there for me.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

I was just teasing. But, seriously, I would like to have a scale like that.

I hope Scooter returns to normal soon. It always takes time ~ at least a good 10 days. It's hard (for all concerned) during that recovery time.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Zapita sends licks and hugs to Scooter, I know I drop everything when Z is sick or the one time she had to have anything out of the norm. Let us know if Scooter needs anything.

Saint

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

She could use some garden fresh tomatos??? LOL

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

lol well I have my first blooms on my new plants but maybe Michelle still has some maters we could send her.
