Post-Op Bariatric Proceedure III

If you can take splenda some of the splenda ice creams are really good. Cream de la Carb is wonderful. I can't tell the difference...but then I use to splenda.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

No thanks! I think abstenance is the best way for me especially since I did not enjoy my venture.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Went to my bariatric doctor this morning and he re-adjusted my band back to the way it was before I got sick. I weighed 261 so I only gained one pound with my band wide open? Ok I'll live with that! Now back to the liquid diet for two days. By the way if this was the gastric by-pass instead of the lap-band it might be a lot more difficult for me. Remember I said that the band can be removed or reopened if necessary? Now you see how safe it is! The gastric by-pass is permanent and non adjustable.

As far as my cough is concerned, the anti-biotics seem to be working. I still cough but not as frequent and severe as before. Seems I have some sort of an allergy.

I was working in my garden yesterday and really did not realize how hot and humid it was and suffered a heat stroke with dizziness and vomiting. My son, well versed on this subject, made an ice pak for me and placed it on the back of my neck plus made me sip some cold water. I must be much more careful in the future as it is the humidity that weakens me and not so much the heat. It was difficult to breathe with so much moisture in the air and today is just as bad so home I'll be...

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

As we say here in Massachusetts, "it ain't the heat what gets you, it's the humidity!"

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Tplant hope your feeling better...did you ever get the neck thingies that stay cool?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, but they were inconvenient when working. Caused irritation from motion. Great if just sitting or walking. I certainly learned my heat tolerance and I'll not knowingly let that happen again as it could be fatal and my tomatos need me! LOL
Meanwhile today is the final day of my liquid diet and I just recieved an e-mail from my bariatric group about a conference for post-bariatric patients at the Westin Hotel in Ft Laud. My former office was there so I'm very familiar with the resort and it is beautiful. I would like to attend but it would prove to be to strenous for me as it includes a full week-end of yoga, excercise, nutrition and cocktails(fruit cocktails) and meeting other successful people but my PPS won't allow the excersise besides I've things to do right here.

Lisbon, Portugal(Zone 10a)

Hi, T!

I'm sorry, I've been lurking over your thread and have been happy to see how great you are doing! How's everything going? you haven't posted in a few days, so I wonder about you!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

MyHiraeth-------I've been in limbo these past few days as I have been going to multiple specialists and therapists because of my shoulders. The pain has been slowly subsiding now with physical therapy but I would like to know why I have such pain. A general diagnosis of arthritis and tendonitis is not good enough for me. I would like to have an MRI to confirm it, however, my orthopedic is on vacation and won't be back for two weeks.

As far as my weight is concerned I'll know more come Friday when I weigh-in as my weekly routine. I only weigh myself once a week and that is on Friday. When last I saw my bariatric doctor he closed my lap-band to the previous measurement that it was before my dreadful cough which seems to be under control but I am still taking antibiotics and just re-filled the prescription yesterday. Because my band was wide open I did gain three pounds but I did not drink enough water. It is amazing that the more water I drink the more weight I lose. Now the band is tightened and I can only eat small amounts of food. I have to keep reminding myself to eat and keep the protein level up as I never have hunger pangs. I see the doctor on Tuesday and I feel lighter so I hope it shows on the scale. I must go today and buy a size smaller pants. From 54 down to 46 and still going down.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

BACK ON TARGET!! Weigh-in shows 259 down from 261 of Tuesdays weigh-in at the doctors office. As I said before my band was tightened so I'm back on track again. Must remember to drink lots of water. The more I drink the more I lose.
Physical therapy seems to be helping my aching shoulders although I had to start taking my anti-inflamatory med and that means it has to be accompanied by prilosec so that it won't upset my duodenal ulcer which has been dormant for many years but acts up every once in a while and medication will do that. Hope I don't have to stay on this regimine for life? My tomato seedlings are starting to sprout so in about six weeks or so they will be transplanted to my EBs and I will certainly need my shoulders by then! Six weeks x 2lbs loss per week = 12lbs. That equals 247 lbs and that is my goal for the end of October.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Great progress Tplant...hope your shoulder does well. Give your seedlings a little hug from Zapita and I (btw how is scooter?)

Have you checked into getting yourself a pair of Crocs?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

"Scoots" is lying in my arms as I am typing. I have a lap top and am in my recliner and she likes to be with me at all times. Quite possible now that I've lost so much of my stomach. A real little cuddler she is.. Crocs won't do for me as I must wear a brace and all my shoes are orthopedic.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

*waves to Scooter* drats I forgot about the brace. I thought they might help with the pain a little on your bad days, but guess not.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! I do not cease do be amazed by your amazing weight loss. Great job, T!!! (You're approaching my husband's current weight!) Can we have a new set of pictures, pleeeeeaase?

I know what you go through with the shoes! Everyone says try these (Birkenstocks, Crocs, Clarks, whatever). And they would either fall off or be too heavy for my foot to lift them on to the wheelchair leg. At least I'm not wearing "extra-depth" shoes any more - those are fairly homely.

Lisbon, Portugal(Zone 10a)

Way to go T! I'm very happy to hear you're doing fine!
We're all rooting for you out here!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I'll try for pictures tomorrow.

You are a new man!!!!!!!! Congratulations! It's amazing!

;-)

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

ok woofens we need your magic for a side by side again *G* Tplant you look fantastic, so many people will say it's the surgery and not give you the credit you deserve but those of us who have followed this thread know the strength of will you have.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks but it is the surgery. If I had that kind of will power in the first place I never would have let myself go like that. Wait till I reach my 200lb goal. I am getting excited every time I must buy a size smaller pants! My shoulders and chest are starting to show instead of my spare tire. Hope to give that a permanent FLAT real soon....

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I've yo yo'd all my life so I know how hard it is and known several people who've had lap band (it's very big here in TX) and belive it or not I've seen several people that haven't lost weight so you get a big hug and pat on the back. Getting flatter by the picture, bet all the ladies in FL are chasin ya.

I'll have to check and see if the insurance company requires the same for the lapband as they do for the RNY, I really like some of the pros to the lap over the RNY.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Congratulations ~ you look GREAT !

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Excuse me but what is RNY?

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

It's a type of gastric bypass

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

I had the RNY in Dec. of 2002. It's where they cut your stomach and make it smaller and then reattached the intestine. This method is fairly new (I mean less than about 10 years), and is done is my area (east TN) quite a bit. My surgeon is very experienced with the RNY method. I have been real pleased with the surgery and results. It was laproscopic for me - I just have 6 little half-inch scars.

But like T has said, it's a permanent change to your body parts. No going back. People should not do it if they are not 100% sure that's what they want to do.

For me, it was a huge blessing. Now I can be on the outside who I have always been on the inside (I wasn't overweight until after age 30). I'm sure T knows what I'm talking about. And the energy level - wow - it's amazing. You just have to make sure and follow the doctor's orders on everything.

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

RNY stands for Roux-en-Y. Roux was the name of one of the first surgeons to use the method of bypassing a portion of the small intestine thus making the Y look/part of the total internal picture. You can Google and find a picture since my explanation probably doesn't do justice! Who was your surgeon Granny?

Awesome picture Ted!!! I am so happy for you.
-Kim

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi Kim -- was just thinking about our Tomato Fest 06 and also looking at the pictures of myself. Quite a difference for me. I feel thin even though I still have about fifty or sixty pounds to go. A mere drop in the bucket as far as I'm concerned. It is great to purchase a size smaller pants every month or so. I've gone from a 54 pant size to 46 and 3x shirt to 2x and some styles to XL. I had to get a new brace for my right leg(polio) as the old one became to loose. Feelin good!!! All this in seven months.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Don't feel to cheerful today. I lost a pound and now weigh 258 but my friend lost his son to a snipers bullet in Iraq tuesday. I know this is off topic but my son is a former marine and I used to worry about him but to lose a son?

Therapy seems to be working for me as my shoulders have become more flexible and the weather today is dry with a strong breeze from the north. Seems to rejuvenate me. Today I need it!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

T-plant,

How confusing for you, to have horribly sad news, and still be enjoying the day so much! Every parent I know would gladly give up life for their children, but to outlive your child... I can't imagine! I'm still glad for you that your shoulder is improving. Hang in there!

xxx, Carrie

Tplant
So sorry to hear about your friend. Will keep his family in my prayers. As for you, congrats on your continued weight loss. :-)

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

blue, my surgeon was Scott Watson, in Johnson City, TN.

t- very sorry to hear about your friend's son. That is very, very hard.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

It is a beautiful day here in So. Fl. and I'm feeling quite well. The physical therapy has broken up the calcium deposits in my shoulders and I can now raise my arms without too much pain. This is good because I have a lot of preparation work in my garden. My earthboxes must be cleaned and weed killer needs to be sprayed in their bed where I keep eleven of them.
Went to my MD appointment yesterday and he was very pleased with my progress and said it was not necessary to make a further adjustment as I am doing very well. It's true! I never feel hungry and eat just what I'm supposed to eat. My next appointment is in four weeks. I bought a pair of chinos the other day. Size 46 regular and not extra baggy if you know what I mean and they fit me as though they were tailor made and this is right off the rack. Also bought a latin shirt, you know the ones with the fancy embroidering and made of cotton so they are nice and cool and I must say "I do look good and feel good. I really can't remember when I was this size? Must be twenty or more years ago! The shirt and the pants match and all I need is a big havana cigar. LOL

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

LOL Tplant you want one you got one! *wink* I can have my relatives in Chile bring me a Cuban cigar in Jan. when they come for a visit. Serg brought several home last Thanksgiving when he went to gift to his boss and they loved them. How often do we here in the US get real Cuban ciagars?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Ha Ha! Thanks but I gave up smoking 26 years ago but I bet I'd look real "COOL!"

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

However, T-plant, you did this all for your health, don't ruin it by smoking! Pleeeeeeaaase!!

xxx, Carrie

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I won't!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

feels great doesn't it? I only stopped 4 years ago but I can't imagine starting again.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Good for you, T.

Sounds great!

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Congrats T-Plant! You are looking great!! ~ Suzi :)
