The sickness continues...

Oh boy. Just made yet another purchase for more bulbs from buggycrazy. Her bulbs are top-notch and so HUGE. The company I work for gets cut flowers every week and lately they've been including some asiatic lilies I drool over every time I see then.

Sounds like a trip to Emily's place is in order next spring/summer!! Does buggycrazy have anything left?! LOL! Emily you are going to have some great gardens next year!

LOL! You're welcome to stop by whenever you want. A lot of the asiatic lilies I have now are in 1-gallon containers until I get around to amending the yucky clay soil in my beds. Some of the bulbs were so big, I put them in 2-gallon containers. That bed gets full sun until about 5pm so maybe not the best bed to plant them in. Anyone had luck planting them in areas with intense sun? The raised bed is right next to a sidewalk as well.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Hmmmm....you're only and hour away. My parents live in St. Helens.....think I'm gonna have to take a detour through Portland next time I go see them! :-)

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Mendy,
Sure, that'd be great! I've tried to plan and plant my beds so starting feb/march, I'll have blooms non-stop until next years frost.

Buggycrazy has pretty of auctions still going. Besides asiatic lilies, she's also selling large clumps of calla lilies for $5. I just about fell over when I saw how many rhyzomes were in each clump. Instead of trying to overwinter them inside, I've planted them (7 clumps total) inside. The first "clump" I got about 2 months ago and the plants are close to 2 feet tall already :).

Between the two of you and Ivory, Buggycrazy really isn't gonna have anything left!! LOL!

Emily, what kind of Calla Lilies are they? I don't mean to undermine her sales, but I have a fairly large clump of the large white ones that needs to be divided.....want some?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

mgh,
you have mail :)

I'd love to join all you addicts, but my ground is hard as a rock! Anyway, between my summer purchases & Dg trades, I don't think I have anymore room in my beds. Sigh. Guess I'll just have to widen them (again!) and move the daylilies/iris out of the back rows into the new front rows. Da Da! More room for lilies!! And maybe some dwarf lilies in the front rows???

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I'm extending my vegi garden area so I can plant a nice, fat row of asiatic lilies there. I....umm... ordered more bulbs last night. She may be posting more in the next couple of the days too. What lilies I don't have room for I'm just going to grow in 1 or 2 gallon sized pots. I've already potted up a bunch of them, and some are large, they were just about as wide as the 1-gallon container!

Mgh,
They are the "giant callas". Here's a link to her calla listing. http://daylily.com/cgi-bin/auction.cgi?cultivarsother&1102825442

No fair you Ladies, purchasing lily bulbs now. My ground is starting to freeze, so I sure can't purchase any bulbs now!!

Guess I will just have to let that green eyed monster called jelousy call to me.
Excuse my spelling. Fibro fog is bad today.

maxine you have green house pot and put in in it dosent have to have heat for potted blubs ? does it ? / not if winter hardy ??

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Emily, yep those are the ones I have. I had soooo many bouquets of them this summer....seems like I was always out there cutting them. The clump I have started out as a tiny cutting I took from our last apartment. I have had it for 71/2 years now and have never divided it!

I'm sure I'll have enough to go around if any of you other ladies would like some.

Wanda, I'm glad you said that about widening your beds and moving things to the front. I have thought about that, but was always afraid things wouldn't do well if I moved them. You don't have any problem with shock and things not blooming do you? I keep dreaming of all the grass I want to tear out to widen my beds, but I don't know how much longer we are going to be at this house. We really need to move and get a bigger place....I would hate to put a lot of money into stuff and then move.

Mendy

Edited to say: Emily you have mail too! LOL!

Starr, you have mail.

Extended my gardening area out an extra 18" leaving a nice space that will receive plenty of morning sun, but not much afternoon sun. Dug up 1/3 of the area, amended the soil, and planted 9 asiatics/orientals. I noticed Buggycrazy posted more auctions today and I couldn't resist...I had to buy more.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Tazzy, please explain about potting up bulbs? Do you mean that I could pot them up, put in a cool place like my unheated dark fruit cellar and then plant out in the spring?

MGH, I would like some in the spring of your giant calla lilies.
What do you wish in trade?

When you dig and transplant your plants try soaking them in Miracle-Gro quick start transplant solution.
I always pour some this mixed up in and around the plant when I recd. order from nursery or other people.
Hope this helps. You very seldom lose a plant this way.

yes just pot and water just alittle and stick in cellar if thy get bone dry just give them a sip DO NOT SOAK OR WATER ANY WITH OUT BONE DRY .YOU can also put in peat moss or buckets of sand STERLIZE SAND

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I soaked them initially just to make sure all of the soil was watered. The won't get watered again until they're quite dry. My basement runs around 60f. Is that too warm to store them?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Emily, I would think at that temp. that they would sprout and start to grow.

I have had that problem before in my other farm house.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Mendy, just saw your post. I'm forever moving things, it seems! My flowerbeds are a constant work in process....

When we built this house , the only flowerbeds were 3 foot wide all around it. The beds kept creeping out & out as I added things and are now 10-12 wide on all four sides of the house.

My first beds in the backyard were narrow too since I had a dog who liked to dig & I didn't want to tempt her too much. And puppies to help her. They dug up a young tree one afternoon & dragged it to the back door! As our dogs got older, I got braver & extended my beds all around the back yard along the fence.

Two years ago, we got Walker the Wonderdog --as in "I wonder what he will destroy next?" Lots of pulled up garden stakes & broken iris/daylily scapes followed. This summer was better & I keep hoping he'll settle down sooner or later...

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Wanda,

Thanks for your reply. I have a feeling I am going to be moving things quite a bit this year! My flowerbeds around the front and one side of the house are about 3-4ft wide. I have thought about widening but haven't done it yet. My beds are edged with bricks so it makes it harder to widen them. (My bright idea a few years ago...not such a bright idea now!) I think I'll wait till we get a bigger place before I put too much more money in the ground though.

I think your Walker the Wonderdog and my Maggie the Monsterdog should get together sometime. Oooohhhh, the trouble those two could get into together!!! Last year Maggie tried to dig up a tree...a very large old Willow in our front yard. She dug down about 3ft. on one side of the trunk. Needless to say we moved her tie-out cable after that! She doesn't dig anymore unless we go to the beach.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Over the last week I've ordered $60 worth of lilies from buggycrazy. So beautiful, so cheap, such great bulbs, I must have more!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi everyone, guess I've been infected with the lily sickness too! I just got 15 bulbs planted last weekend and said that I was done for the year and then bought 15 more last night from Brent & Becky's 50% off sale. Should have plenty of lilies and daylilies next year!

Tazzy, I've got a question about your comment above:

Quoting:
yes just pot and water just alittle and stick in cellar if thy get bone dry just give them a sip DO NOT SOAK OR WATER ANY WITH OUT BONE DRY .YOU can also put in peat moss or buckets of sand STERLIZE SAND

Is this for storage, or will they grow roots? I'm afraid I'm going to have to store the ones I bought last night, the weather man said this morning that we are going to have a few days of rain/snow mix then freezing temps. Can I just put all 15 bulbs into one 5 gallon bucket with peat or potting soil and put in the root cellar? Or will I need to pot separately?

Thanks!
Vicki

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

storage and must be cool and dark .

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Tazzy!

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

TOO ! thats what my grandson says you say i love you and he goes too ! Going to grow up to be a man of few words .?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

uh oh.... I soaked all my bulbs in containers... need to put them outside. It's 61f out there so they'll sprout earlier with this nice warm weather anyway.
