2010 Iris Season Begins ....Part Two

South Hamilton, MA

both

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Iris prep picture
1. Write name on foliage., remove from garden and wash off. I use a scrub brush on the rhizomes.
2. Soak in a 10 percent solution of bleach water, one cup bleach to nine cups of water. for 10 minutes,
3. Trim foliage and discard, do not compost. Let dry. I usually package in a brown paper bag with a picture of the bloom and a garden marker. Vinyl blinds make great markers.

Watch out for 'bleach splash'. I now have a pair of couderoy pant s which have perminent brown spots on them as the iris fell into the continer of wash & have to be used for gardening only.

Thank you! Now I can do right by my poor rescued babies as I get them sent to new homes.

Here's a hint for identifying noid irises. Once you think you have found the correct name, ask for it from someone that is already growing it in your zone. Plant it next to yours and wait until it blooms to be sure it blooms at the same time, and looks the same. If not from your zone, you may have to wait two years before the characteristics match. I have identified both Wabash and Flavescens this way. I am currently looking for Gingersnap being grown in zone 5. I am trying to help Happydad id some of his.

Dragonfly62 -- Yes Village Gossip is a small flower. I was disappointed the first time it bloomed because I usually love the big ruffled ones. But it more than makes up for it’s size. The contrasting colors really stands out even across the garden people notice it first.

TroubleX2 -- I got my Bewilderbeast from Shreiners several years ago. Don’t know if they still have it.

Betja – Thanks for the info on Merchant Marine. Yes my NOID does look like Gracious Curves….but the standards are definitely a pale, pale pink.

I second the WOW on Bea's black beauty!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks DF. I just love the beard on the black beauty. The plant may be large enough to divide next year. Let ya know. Our blue ones look similar although yours look a bit more on the lavender side.Mine are more blue in person. Maybe the cameras we have capture the color differently.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I am looking for a white ruffled one with an orange beard. I gave all mine away and didn't know it till I had none about 12 yrs ago.

Trouble X2.............Yes, I used to trade my daylilies all the time, then I realized I never had many blooms or had any clumps, 'cause they were always getting dug up....LOL

It's been several years since I've dug any so D-mail me and we can do a trade. I actually have a few in pots that I could trade also.

This is one of my un-named seedlings.
Need to think of a good name for it.

I meant me send you some daylilies for Bewilderbeast. What I should have said is will you trade iris for daylilies.

Golden Panther! WOW!!! Love it!

I'm especially excited about the "broken color" irises that are giving me their first blooms this year!

Here's 'Batik', a deeper royal blue than this photo shows (those blue/purple colors are hard to capture!)
