Divine socks, auras, spinning, and other assorted chatter

Lodi, United States

I don't have ALL of her books--but I have 2 more than I did yesterday:0)

Unfortunately, James Dickey was my creative writing instructor as an undergraduate, so "Bah Bah Black Sheep" aside, the only sheep poem I know is unfit to print.

My favorite bucolic (oh that is cows, isn't it?), okay, pastoral poem is Frances Cornford's "TO A FAT LADY SEEN FROM THE TRAIN":

O why do you walk through the fields in gloves,
Missing so much and so much?
O fat white woman whom nobody loves,
Why do you walk through the fields in gloves,
When the grass is soft as the breast of doves
And shivering-sweet to the touch?
O why do you walk though the fields in gloves,
Missing so much and so much?

It is sad and could use a few lambs to brighten it up.

Here is Brown Aura....See the different browns.

Being in a hotel, I had to improvise.
I took the tray that held the glasses and put a shower cap over it to cover it and it is now my plate. One of the cups holds my smokey Mozz cheeze, the hunk of bread is from Boudin Sourdough on the wharf and called Garlic Explosion. The garlic and mushroom combo is from safeway. The cheeses are the smokey moz and a soft cheeze with roasted garlic and pesto... Oh and the wine...perfectally chilled reisling that is yummy.... For desert, the chocolate that I got at Chocolate heaven... Chocolate covered Raspberry's and Blueberry's.

The kids think they are partying like rock stars, I am living like a queen...ok a garlic queen, but none the less a queen. I got internet, a computer and Cable TV.....

My only issue I did not have was a plate, but solved that with a shower cap covered tray. I know it is sterile and they always have them things in the room....

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I'll have to remember that valuable tip there MsJestr!!! Thank you!

Lodi, United States

I use the shower cap to plug the sink when I go to Brazil. For some reason they never have a plug in the sink--even in the nicer hotels. I always need to wash out my clothes after being in the field all day, so I need to fill the sink. Shower caps work pretty well. Maybe someone should write a book on uses for motel shower caps?

1) To make a sterile plate out of a tray.
2) To plug sinks for washing clothes......

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Catscan, that is a good idea...

To cover your head when you shower!

And I forgot Blake!

It can't really compete with "The Sheep" but for what it's worth:

The Lamb
William Blake

Little Lamb, who made thee
Does thou know who made thee
Gave thee life & bid thee feed.
By the stream & o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing woolly bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice.
Making all the vales rejoice:
Little Lamb who made thee
Does thou know who made thee

Little Lamb I'll tell thee,
Little Lamb I'll tell thee;
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb:
He is meek & he is mild,
He became a little child
I a child & thou a lamb,
We are called by His name,
Little Lamb God bless thee,
Little Lamb God bless thee.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

A classic poem - thanks for adding that one! Right now, I would not say that Marshmallow has a particularly tender voice. In fact, it's rather piercing and persistent when she is in "feed me now" mode.

Lodi, United States

Well, Blake was more of a visionary than a realist. But perhaps if you read Marshmallow the poem she could catch the spirit of the thing. I know my mother used to enjoy reading me these lovely Robert Louis Stevenson verses:

Good and Bad Children

CHILDREN, you are very little,
And your bones are very brittle;
If you would grow great and stately,
You must try to walk sedately.

You must still be bright and quiet,
And content with simple diet;
And remain, through all bewild’ring,
Innocent and honest children.

Happy hearts and happy faces,
Happy play in grassy places—
That was how, in ancient ages,
Children grew to kings and sages.

But the unkind and the unruly,
And the sort who eat unduly,
They must never hope for glory—
Theirs is quite a different story!

Cruel children, crying babies,
All grow up as geese and gabies,
Hated, as their age increases,
By their nephews and their nieces.

While my own children were greatly helped by Shockheaded Peter. Sadly, today, such moral instruction is out of favour. Here is one of my favourites.

The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb

One day, Mamma said, "Conrad dear,
I must go out and leave you here.
But mind now, Conrad, what I say,
Don't suck your thumb while I'm away.
The great tall tailor always comes
To little boys that suck their thumbs.
And ere they dream what he's about
He takes his great sharp scissors
And cuts their thumbs clean off, - and then
You know, they never grow again."

Mamma had scarcely turn'd her back,
The thumb was in, alack! alack!

The door flew open, in he ran,
The great, long, red-legged scissorman.
Oh! children, see! the tailor's come
And caught our little Suck-a-Thumb.

Snip! Snap! Snip! the scissors go;
And Conrad cries out - Oh! Oh! Oh!
Snip! Snap! Snip! They go so fast;
That both his thumbs are off at last.
Mamma comes home; there Conrad stands,
And looks quite sad, and shows his hands;-
"Ah!" said Mamma "I knew he'd come
To naughty little Suck-a-Thumb."

Looks fabulous Green! And very into my aura! I love Maine. My parents live in Nova Scotia, just to the east of Maine. I drive through Maine to visit them. Love your garden.

Catscan, your poems are very appropriate for naughty little lambs. She is developing the puppy tendency to put everything in her mouth. So far this morning, I have had to remove from her grasp: wool, zipper pull on a jacket, spinning wheel bobbin, ice cream wrapper (which she stole from the garbage can), a scarf with fringe on it, Kleenex, plastic bag ties, a small cardboard box, and a pair of my socks (not wool).

With apologies to Hoffmann,

The Story of Little Suck-a-Lamb

One day, Mamma said, "Marshmallow dear,
I must go out and leave you here.
But mind now, lambie, what I say,
Don't suck anything while I'm away.
The great tall tailor always swings
By little lambs that suck on things.
And ere they dream what he's about
He takes his great sharp scissors
And cuts their tongues clean off, - and then
You know, they never grow again."

Mamma had scarcely turn'd her back,
The lamb sucked wool, alack! alack!

The door flew open, in he ran,
The great, long, red-legged scissorman.
Oh! lambies, see! the tailor! Scram!
He wants our little Suck-a-Lamb!

Snip! Snap! Snip! the scissors go;
And Marshmallow cries out - Oh! Oh! Oh!
Snip! Snap! Snip! They go so fast;
But Marshmallow runs and leaps at last.
Mamma comes home; Marshmallow's flung...
...the door open, and shows her tongue;-
"Ah!" said Mamma "You good little lass"
Marshmallow said "I kicked his...

Green.. your pics are amazingly beautiful... I can dream of sitting at that fireplace.. I have a small outside fireplace I did that here.. on a very small city type scale.. Staring at the fire with Cody is my favorite thing in the evening..

Me likey.....
lolol.

Richmond, TX

The green vistas are beautiful! Around here we've been having a drought; everything is brown and crispy. Perhaps it is to go with my aura which was heavy in two of the tans: logical and ENVIRONMENTAL! I would like to think the green part would win out.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

and then... the mean ol mommy had to apply a LID to the top of the playpen!!

Little baby goat kid kept jumping out and retasting everything lamb spit out!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Mean ol Mommy! Little goats are supposed to jump out of their play pen! LOL!

The fiber.....it is spun. The spinning has been completed for the single. Now it has to rest for a day or so to set the twist a bit, and then I shall ply it (and hope like heck that there is enough to make the right yardage).

Claire is there no end to your talents? I am truly impressed at your talents.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Glad you are safe home Miss J. Always good to be on holiday, but always good to be home too.

No special talents here - just an ordinary spinning wheel! Glad you like it!
