2009 Blooms #5

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Brushstroke opened it's first flower this morning! It was bit tricky to get a pic since it was at eye level to me and it faces up!

You rock! I applaud you for your willingness to charge on and grow the things you love. I have rabbits, voles and chipmunks, but they are a piece of cake compared to deer and (yipes) squirrels. So many people just throw up there hands and miss the chance to surround themselves with beauty that transforms their every day experience. Really cool!

And Regale starting to open...

Eyeliner is holding up very well in the rain we have had!!

as is Desert Song!! We had very strong winds Friday night....even blew a planter off a shepard hook...but none of my lilies broke I was AMAZED & HAPPY!!

So glad Sue sent me this one!!

Those stems are much stronger than you would think, aren't they? I just about sat on one while mulching yesterday...needless to say, they aren't quite that strong. Lol.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

ROTFL ~ don't you just hate it when you swing your ol' butt around and take out a plant? One poorly placed squat can snap a stem quite nicely. ;)

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I snapped a bud off one the other day and bout had a cow!!!!! BEV

LOL!!! "swing your ole butt" -" had a cow"

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It's way easier to get mad about someone else wrecking a lily than looking no further than the mirror and realizing that you are the careless, thoughtless wonder who wrecked the darn stem.

That said, it's my own darn fault for planting in a way that you absolutely have fingers and toes crossed. There is no room to place your body, no matter how large or small, to get into some of these beds I have further created (expanded). The "lily field" should have been planted in organized rows. Lol. Yeah right....

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

You are right Mag, It is total confustion. Watch where you step lose balance and mash everything. BEV

HA!! I thought I was the only that planted things in such away that when it is time to divide or I want to move something, I have to be a contortionist to get to it and get it out!!

Join the club nanny LOL !!

I find ten years of dance classes come in quite handy. I do more leaning and twisting and standing on the ball of my feet than I ever did in class. Of course, like in class, you sometimes take a tumble (into the rose bed! OUCH!) Down on all fours, going in head first, under this, around that, and then - when I've reached it - how to get out????

What a hoot!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah...have I done it that way too. Ugh! Now I know I am not alone in my weeding trends.

Thomson, GA

Looks like most everyone here is still enjoying Asiatics. Mine have been done for a while as they started blooming in April, but I have a few OT's and my Orientals are starting to open. I think this is Yelloween, but it looks a little different than most of the photos I have seen of it. It is almost 7' tall this year. My flower seems to be a little lighter on the edge of the petals, almost white. Very fragrant. The flowers are so perfect they look artificial. If it's not Yelloween I have no idea what it is.

More than one plant has meet an untimely demise here!! So glad to know I am not alone. I was just telling DH I need to make a 'Lily Bed' with just lilies in it. Nice and organized....is that a pipe dream?????

Beautiful Bev!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It looks a lot to me like 'Conca d'Or'. 'Yelloween' is an upfacing lily. Whatever you have there is quite lovely ;)

Thomson, GA

That's it! I have lost most of the tags from a couple years ago, but I know Conca d'Or was one I planted back then. Thanks so much for helping me ID.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Yes but your bed of " total confusion" looks so great !

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

My garden used to be fairly neat, tidy and well spaced (2 years ago)

Thumbnail by Moby
Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh Mary, it still looks much more organized and neat compared to mine... :) I think it looks wonderful! :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Now... not so much

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ooooh, I like it even better now!! Yeah, that's the way a garden is supposed to look!! You go girl!! :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yes, but the poor irises are rotting away from all the overgrowth. Now there's a
"butt-swingin' " chore I'm not looking forward to. Just think of all the lilies I could take out!! >:(

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Just don't be dancing while you're in there weeding!! :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Not much danger of that happening any time soon ~ supposed to be 100° tomorrow and Weds. so guess I'll be staying in and making a new gazing ball... or 2.

So I braved it today (only 96°) and took a few pics. Here's Sally

Trogon

Does anyone else have problems with the outside petals snapping off of their LAs? Particularly the bowl-shaped ones. Sometimes I wonder if they're so sturdy that they border on brittle.

Moby, that is a stunning picture of Trogon! Nice looking plant!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

The wind and rain took out a bunch of petals on 3 of my newly opened LAs the other day, so, yes I have the same problem.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Beautiful blooms; I like Sally.

Bev and Moby--nice gardens. They have that full cottagey look, just my style. :-)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I have the same petal breakage issue with LA hybrids too. I especially noticed it when I worked as a floral designer- they became really popular as cut flowers, but I found them a pain to work with. Couldn't keep the blooms looking nice enough to use them in a design. Customers paying $5 a stem for them do not expect to see missing petals.

Moby- your garden is gorgeous- love seeing the comparison shots! I LOVE Trogon....and Sally, ....and Midnight too!

guardian, that's a beautiful plant- my Conca d'Or have fat buds now, I'm excited to see them in their 2nd year. My first OTs started over the weekend, Yelloween and a couple of the American series. LOs Triumphator and Pink Heaven (I think) were ready to pop yesterday, so I'm sure there are blooms out there now. Gotta get some pics today.

Hybrid trumpets are reaching their peak bloom here. This was labeled 'Casa Rosa' from Dutch Gardens several years ago. Looks a lot like Pink Perfection to me.

Oh I have the FFO on Triumphator!!!! This a small one on one of the shorter stems. I am really going to have to divide this soon. My two bulbs planted in 2007 have made a very nice clump!

Thats a pretty one nanny!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Wow! Fabulous.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Love all the garden shots. Sumur is looking so nice this year. In the fall, I'm going to move my 3 bulbs of Radiance to the same bed if I can find room.

Here's Radiance. Held up well to the heavy rain yesterday morning.

Dusky Rose from the PNWLS turns this color after a few days.
