Left alone, they make for excellent ground-level pest control. We named our largest one Pietro, and he is very helpful.

Can give one quite a scare, with those garish colors, while turning over leaf litter and earth in the garden! Sensitive to vibration; wants nothing more than to hide, may have poor eyesight in the daytime. If one comes toward you, tap the ground in front of you and watch them scurry away. They prey mainly on pillbugs (armadillidium vulgare), which are also called woodlice.
