There's nothing you can say that is bad about Carabid beetles. They are ferocious predators of slugs and snails and caterpillars, and some (like this one) are like living jewellery!
Carabus splendens comes from the Pyrenees mountains near Spain, Europe, grows to 1.5 inches long and looks as if it's been gold-plated!
You are lucky to have this in your garden.
