I'm pretty sure this species or a close cousin to it has built a colony in my side yard. They return each spring. They dig solitary ground nests but travel in a big pack. They have orange/yellow thoraces and subtly whitish-yellow striped black abdomens. They are about the same size as european honeybees, maybe just a bit smaller. They never stop buzzing but seem very docile.
