This species is widespread in Britain, found in or near woods. The breeding ground is wet, very rotten dead wood, Larvae are found in rotting sawdust and wood, etc.

The adult feeds mainly on the honey-dew secreted by aphids, and can be seen licking it off leaves. They are rarely seen feeding on flowers.
